At Beaconsfield Primary School, we value the input of our students. There are many opportunities for our students to have a say in their learning and their school. In Grade 6 we offer our students the opportunity to hold a leadership position. Many of our students put their hand up for the role and the teachers and leadership have the hard task of selecting a chosen few. Taylah, one of our school captains, has shared some of her thoughts about learning at Beaconsfield Primary School.
“Learning is one of the main parts of school, either listening or teaching someone else something.
The teachers at Beaconsfield teach us learning in an approachable way, knowing we’ll take in new information.
Our teachers engage us with a different variety of activities. Sometimes we have hands on activities using different equipment like the MAB blocks in Maths or watching a video, taking notes and looking at an autobiography book to look for responses.
In my opinion, the way the teachers plan the activity so they aren’t all the same and they are enjoyable, is a really great way for us to learn.
Like Mr Buckingham said ‘It’s never too late to be a learner, it doesn’t just stop at high school.”

Another captain is Piper. Piper is our science captain. Piper is very passionate about science and has worked closely with our science teacher, Anita Jacobsen, and her friends to offer our Grade 2 students a fun activity to promote Science. The grade 2 students were given opportunity to make slime during lunchtimes. Before the activity, Piper needed to test and work out the correct recipe. She also needed to work with a budget. Here is her recount.
“I’m Piper and I am the science captain for Beacy Primary. Last term I thought about what I could do for a project, when the idea of slime popped into my head. Over the course of many weeks, Ms Jacobsen, my team and I planned and tested our slimes until week 6 when we did the event with the grade twos. It was so much fun and we had a blast.”

Lastly, we have our Student Representative Council (SRC). This group comprises of two Grade 6 captains, Tilly and Noah and student-chosen representative from grades 3 to 5. This term our SRC is organising a Beacy’s Got Talent show. We are looking forward to our students having the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents and we will conclude with a whole school performance with one winning act from each year level performing in front of our school community. The promotion and organisation of this event is all performed by our students.
We understand that students are more engaged in our school when they feel connected and a sense of ownership. Whether it is in the classroom or part of our bigger community, our teachers and staff work hard to support student voice and agency, and it is very evident at Beaconsfield Primary School.
Looking forward to the Spring days to get out and about in Beaconsfield.
