Literature comes to Life at Beaconsfield Primary School
On Thursday 18th August, the students and staff of Beaconsfield Primary School dressed up as characters from stories to celebrate Book Week. The day saw the school community in amazing costumes representing such a variety of literature that our children have access to.
At Beaconsfield Primary School, we work very hard with our community to instil a love of reading. We believe by students having this passion, that they are able to open up their world and be exposed to so many new experiences. A book can present the opportunity to take you away with the imagination of the author or to enable you to learn new knowledge and concepts about the world we live in. Having the skills and ability to read and comprehend what we are reading, empowers our students to be able to communicate effectively and provide them with many opportunities.
When we welcome our students to our school in their Prep year, they come to school having been exposed to books through family and friends. We then continue their journey of learning to read and reading to learn. In the younger years, teaching them the concepts of print and decoding the texts. As they progress, we work with them to comprehend and ‘think’ about what the text is about. There are many strategies as proficient readers that we use to interpret what we are reading – finding the main idea, making connections, inferring, etc.
At Beaconsfield Primary School, we have a fantastic resource of literature for our students to use throughout the school. We have a library that boasts thousands of books from a variety of genres and topics for students to borrow. In the classroom, students have access to books throughout the day and to take home and practice the art of reading. During their day at school, our students will have many opportunities to read and to be read to.
As I finish writing this article, I am inspired to go and pick up a book to read. I hope you do as well.
