On the 8th May 1915, Hugh was wounded with a gunshot wound to the chest. After convalescing in hospital, he was transported back to Australia on the hospital ship Euripides.
Hugh returned to Australia on the 29th January 1915 and was discharged on the 17th April 1916.
On the 20th September 1920, Hugh received the Star Medal 1914/1915. He also received the British War Medal on the 8th March 1922 and the Victory Medal on the 22nd May 1922.
In 1920 Hugh married Eva Marion Davies in St Kilda, Victoria. They had two children, Clive Wellington and Margot.
Hugh died on 3rd November 1970 at 69 Humphries Road, Frankston, Victoria and was cremated on the 5th November 1970 at the Springvale Cemetery, Victoria.
