On the 16th November 1916, John was wounded in action.
He returned to Australia on the 25th September 1919 and was discharged on the 5th January 1920.
John received the British War Medal on 16th March 1922 and, later, the Victory Medal on the 8th December 1923.
John married Aimee Clarice Geddes in 1920, they had two children Joan and John.
After the war John lived in Melbourne as a Railway employee.
He died on the 6th September 1944 and was buried on Friday 8th September at the Melbourne General Cemetery.

Shunter Killed Near Yea.
Mr Peter (Jack) McMahon of 215 Clarendon Street, South Melbourne was killed on Wednesday when he was jammed between a train buffer and a crane while on shunting duty in the Molesworth yard, near Yea. Mr McMahon is survived by his wife, daughter (Joan) and son (Jack).

Mr Peter Daniel McMahon, a railwayman who was killed at Molesworth on September 6, when he was crushed against a crane, was the son of the late Mr and Mrs John McMahon, former residents of Officer.
